Tuesday, February 11th at 1pm ET Hosted by the Editorial Design & Production Committee When chatGPT burst onto the scene in November 2022, it seemed like the future was here. Machines that write text and generate art. Computers that conduct peer review. Algorithms that control marketing. Artificial intelligence (AI) seemed poised to revolutionize the publishing industry. It also raised a number of practical and ethical questions for university presses. Should an AI be listed as an author? Can copyrighted text be used to train AI? What bias might an AI bring to the review process? Before we can answer these and similar questions, we need to be clear on what exactly we are talking about. In this two-part virtual workshop, we will provide a crash course in artificial intelligence. This first session of two in this series will explore what AI is, its current capabilities, and its ethical implications. The second session will look at some practical AI-driven tools that can be used today by staff at university presses. Part 2 will be held on February 25th at 1pm ET, registration to be announced soon. These sessions will be interactive; no technical experience is required. Bring your questions and your curiosity. Panelists: Leo Lo is the dean of the College of University Libraries & Learning Sciences at the University of New Mexico. His work focuses on developing Al competencies and training programs for library and higher education professionals. As the current president of the Association of College and Research Libraries (ACRL), Dr. Lo has established a national task force to develop a set of Al competencies. James F. McGrath is the chair of the Department of Philosophy and Religious Studies at Butler University in Indianapolis, where he is also the Clarence L. Goodwin Chair in New Testament Language and Literature. His PhD is from the University of Durham in England. In addition to numerous books and articles related to early Christianity, he has also published on Mandaeism and the intersection of religion and science fiction. In the context of the latter and as an author of science fiction short stories, McGrath has addressed possible future scenarios involving AI. He is currently involved in a collaborative project with his colleague in computer science Dr. Ankur Gupta on the intersection of AI and the humanities, especially ethics and religion. Together they have nearly completed a book on teaching the humanities in the era of generative AI. Jeffrey Riman is Assistant Professor at the Fashion Institute of Technology.
